Inuit Recollections on the Military Presence in Iqaluit
Memory and History in Nunavut Volume Two
Description
With the outbreak of World War II, Iqaluit and the Eastern Arctic were found to be strategic areas in the defense of North America. This brought a new kind of people to Inuit lands: the military. This book consists of interviews with thirty three elders on topics such as the outbreak of World War II, US weather stations, military sites in Iqaluit, Inuit working for the military, and more. Excerpts of archival documents, as well as photographs and maps, are included to support, illustrate, and complement the elders' memories.
