Raven and the Rock

Storytelling in Chukotka

Description

Storyteller and folklorist Kira Van Deusen presents 25 traditional folktales and legends (in English translation) from present-day Chukotka, where indigenous peoples are reclaiming their traditions and identity after years of assimilative forces of Soviet policy. The tales, retold in modern settings, convey values tellers admire and wish to pass on: the courage of persistence, wisdom and loyalty, the ability to find good in what appears evil, the maintenance of good relationships with animals, and a sense of humor, providing a cross-section of oral tradition.
