Honorary Fellow, Newnham College, Cambridge, and Reader Emerita, University of Cambridge, was Director of the East African Institute of Social Research (Makerere), 1950-56, President of the Royal Anthropological Institute, 1960-61, and President of the African Studies Association, 1964-66. She is author of Land, Labour, and Diet in Northern Rhodesia (1939) and editor of Economic Development and Tribal Change (1954) and East African Chiefs (1960).
